Maclean's 麦考林杂志是一本新闻评论杂志，有点像美国的时代杂志，但是很特别，它每年都会出两期的特刊，一份就是针对加拿大大学的特辑，一份是针对加拿大学院的特辑。

针对加拿大大学的排名机构有QS、TIME HIGH EDUCATION、上海交大和台湾大学，加上加拿大本土的Maclean's，一共5家。Maclean's排名只针对加拿大本土的大学，而一些其他的机构，是从世界范围来看加拿大大学和专业。

Maclean's杂志是从1991年开始对加拿大大学进行学术排名，至今已经进行27年。它是从大学学生录取的平均分数、获奖情况、国际留学生的比例、教师、学校的资源、学校对学生的支持，及大学的知名度等多方面，将加拿大大学分成三大类进行分别排名的：医学博士类、综合大学类、本科。医学院和博士类大学都拥有广泛的博士项目，并且都有医学院；综合类大学拥有大量的研究项目和广泛的本科及研究生水平的课程；基础类大学重点在于本科教育，有较少的研究生项目。评价体系针对六大指标进行评比，分别是学生情况和班级数量，师资力量，研究经费和运行预算，学生奖学金和学生服务占预算比例，图书馆的规模和藏书量以及学校的声誉。
2018年在册的49所大学通过这三大类进行了排名。其中医学博士类有15所，综合大学类有15所，本科类19所。

专业的排名
Maclean's杂志是按照六大类专业排名：工程、医学、生命科学、商科、护理、环境科学。2017年的更新后多了几类：心理学、数学、生物科学、物理科学、计算机科学、教育。
另外还增加了一种排名就是学生最喜欢的大学排名，很有意思的是从这里可以看出许多本地学生对大学的标准和留学生及家长对大学的排名标准非常不同！
