for hammer-drive anchor:
The pin is hard but the main body of the anchor is soft metal.
Use whatever you got to chip out the material from around the pin, now you can get the claw of your hammer under the head of the pin.
If no room for hammer, use vice grips to grab it.
When installed, these anchors leave only a flat head at the surface. Extraction methods for these hard-to-remove fasteners vary, but recommendations for removing hammer drive anchors and split-drive anchors include: - Pulling out the anchor with a flat prybar and hammer
- Removing the head with a grinder, then flattening the protruding anchor
- Chiseling under the head and pulling out the anchor
I used a regular old 1/2" chisel and a hammer to cut the heads off the anchors and then used a prybar to draw the nails out.
At work, I use a 1/2" cold chisel to take the mushroom head off, and then pull the nail in the center out with a claw hammer. It leaves a small sleeve in the concrete, but it is flush with the surface.
Edit: Put some duct tape on the surface before using the cold chisel to prevent marring the sign.
